About Us

Directed by Dr. Tracie Canada, the HEARTS Lab focuses on an intersectional critique of sport, while foregrounding the lived experiences of Black athletes.

This intellectual environment addresses various dimensions of the history, economics, and racial and gender politics of play, performance, exercise, and sport.

Overall, we are interested in the critical study of sport, the ethnographic contributions of Black scholars, and work that places a critical focus on how race is embodied and how bodies are racialized.

Goals

  • Bring together interdisciplinary and intergenerational scholars who are invested in accessibly-written publications, public engagement, and inclusive programming.

  • Host lectures and workshops for and by those studying the nuances of racialized experiences through ethnography and the intersections of race, gender, and sport.

  • Integrate academic and public audiences who are not usually in conversation about the multiple dimensions of sport. This includes an exchange  of ideas between (at least) scholars, fans, athletes, and writers.

  • Encourage students to gain hands-on experience, attend conferences, network with relevant scholars, and develop skills for post-secondary education through student-involved and student-led research.
